The Little Book of Pocket Spells: Everyday Magic for the Modern Witch by Akasha Moon

The Little Book of Pocket Spells: Everyday Magic for the Modern Witch
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

The Little Book of Pocket Spells is a highly recommended read for those who are still new with New Age or Wicca. This 150-page is filled with interesting information and I learned a lot from perusing this small book. I discover about the power of herbs such as rosemary, thyme, sage, and lavender; even garlic and onions are also helpful in cleaning an area. Furthermore, some spells were written in this tiny book such as charms for wealth, grief, and protecting a child.

Review: Second Generation - The Things I Didn't Tell My Father

Second Generation - The Things I Didn't Tell My Father
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Second Generation is a graphic novel written and illustrated by Michel Kichka. It tells about not only the story of his dad, Henri, but also how the author and his siblings grew up with a parent who was a Holocaust survivor. The recollections of what happened to Michel's dad in this book are less vivid and haunting compared to the other books I've read before that tackles the same topic.
However, I found the ending a little bit odd and abrupt. Nonetheless, it's an entertaining graphic novel that will like by readers.

Dancing on a Powder Keg: The Intimate Voice of a Young Mother and Author, Her Letters Composed in the Lengthening Shadow of the Third Reich; Her Poems from the Theresienstadt Ghetto. by Ilse Weber
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is not the first time that I've read a book that is about the Holocaust; some of them were memoirs of the survivors and those victims who died in that unfortunate and horrifying event. The most notable Holocaust victim is Anne Frank, and I can't help compare what happened to her to to Ilse Weber. This book contains the correspondence of Ilse to her friend, Lilian; reading these letters will drawn readers to what she and her family experienced before and during the Holocaust era.

Moreover, there are poems/ode of Ilse that were both beautifully written and heart-rending. Ilse wrote these poems as a secret way to inform Lilian on what's really happening to her and her family in the ghetto. Through her words, I was able to imagine how hard it was to endure the suffering inflicted on them. This book provides another glimpse to that dark period of the world history — reading this reminds us not only to remember the victims and what happened to them, but also to prompt readers that we should try to prevent it from happening again.

Killer Fashion: Poisonous Petticoats, Strangulating Scarves, and Other Deadly Garments Throughout History by Jennifer Wright

Killer Fashion: Poisonous Petticoats, Strangulating Scarves, and Other Deadly Garments Throughout History Killer Fashion: Poisonous Petticoats, Strangulating Scarves, and Other Deadly Garments Throughout History by Jennifer Wright
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Killer Fashion is a very informative and quite an entertaining book to read. This 48-page book tackles some of the fashion mishaps in the history that will leave you shock in the end. I just found a certain illustration in this picture book to be not as exactly the trivia it wants to portray; the artwork for the Lotus Feet looks like more Japanese instead of Chinese women.

In spite of this minor inaccuracy, the facts about the invention and the terrible accidents caused by these peculiar fashion trends provides interesting information. Indeed, fashion kills unintentionally. Some will follow the fad even though they might not aware that their lives are at stake — because of fame and for aesthetic purposes, they will sacrifice anything just to appear glamorous.

Leave This Song Behind: Teen Poetry At Its Best

26702564AUTHOR: John Meyer, Stephenie Meyer, Adam Halwitz, Cindy Spertner
PUBLISHER: HCI
PUBLICATION DATE: April 26, 2016
PAGES: 216
SYNOPSIS FROM GOODREADS:

It's been 10 years since the last book in the Teen Ink series Written in the Dirt was published. Now, a whole new batch of teen writers has emerged with their own unique voices. Leave This Song Behind features the best poetry submitted by those writers to Teen Ink over the last five years. The pieces in this book were chosen because they were so powerful that they stood out from the rest. Teen Ink editors took a deep look into each poem's strengths then divided Leave This Song Behind into seven sections based on the poetic techniques or qualities that moved them most. Vivid sensory details made some poems shine; others caught their attention with simple, sparse language. Still others were chosen because of their thoughtful use of form; compelling stories; strong figurative language; unexpected connections and wit; and fresh writing about familiar topics.
Dig in and let these brave young voices capture your heart and mind with their passion, their pain, and their amazing poetry!

MY RATING:5starsLeave This Song Behind is a collection of poems that depicts different life situations teens experiences: such as depression, problems with parents, sexuality and love issues, to name a few. Teen poetry but a young adult, such as I, still can relate to some of the poems in this book.

Several of these poems that I associate myself into are: Write What You Know by Mandy Seiner; Charcoal Boat by Callie Zimmerman; A Letter to the Past, Present, and Future Selves by Sofia Wesley; and Chinese Politics (over dim sum) - Eda Tse. There are other poems that are quite remarkable, e.g., Don't Fall In Love by Claire Podges; and The Sistine Closet by Hannah Livernois.

The selection of poems in this outstanding book will leave readers ponder whether they have experienced the same situation or currently in that state, which was described in each poem. If you are into poetry, having a copy of this impressive book should not be missed.

Thanks to the publisher for the review copy of this.

If You Give a Man a Cookie: A Parody

30754972AUTHOR: Laura Joffe Numeroff
PUBLISHER: Andrews McMeel Publishing
PUBLICATION DATE: October 10, 2017
PAGES: 32
SYNOPSIS FROM GOODREADS:

#1 New York Times bestselling author Laura Numeroff, author of the hugely popular children’s book If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, offers this hilarious parody of her own book for the man in your life.

If you give a man a cookie...he's going to want milk to go with it...God forbid he should get it himself.

If You Give a Man a Cookie is a woman’s commentary about her helpless man and the chain of events that leads him on a journey from the bed to the bathroom to the couch and back to bed at nightfall.

MY RATING:4STARSIf You Give a Man a Cookie is a 32-pages pure comic entertainment. Wives would be able to relate to the funny and — more often than not — annoying behaviors of their husbands that were narrated in this graphic novel.

This comics made me realize that (a lot of) women are indeed mature in thinking than men. Thus, we usually clean up their mess, both literally and figuratively, and take care of their needs as they behave like a child sometimes. Ending is both funny and it's like that the author was trying to convey a message: that women should not always try to pamper their partners.

JJ's Journey: A Story of Heroes and Heart by Tracy Calhoun

34713806AUTHOR: Tracy Calhoun
PUBLISHER: Diversion Publishing
PUBLICATION DATE: October 3, 2017
PAGES: 331
SYNOPSIS FROM GOODREADS:
It was 2014 at Samaritan Evergreen Hospice House in Washington State, and a 90 year old woman in her final stage of a coma had been totally unresponsive for several days. The woman had no family or friends, and the staff expected she would pass very soon. Tracy, one of the nurses, went in to sit by her side during these final hours. While she was there, her dog, JJ, a staff -therapist- came to join her and hopped up on the bed. JJ snuggled up next to the elderly woman and nuzzled the woman's hand with her snout. And, the woman began stroking JJ's face. Somehow, JJ had reached her, wherever the woman was. Tracy was touched and quickly recorded it on her phone. In August 2015, that video went viral and has been seen tens of millions of times.
Helping Humans is a heartwarming memoir of a nurse and her dog and their combined efforts to bring peace and consolation to humans in times of crisis and grief. We learn about the work done at the hospice house, the different kinds of work a therapy dog does both inside and outside of hospitals at crisis centers, shelters for domestic violence victims, and after major disasters where they comfort first responders and victims. Rich with informative detail, we also learn the intricacies of training animals for this work, the complexities of recognizing whether the dog has the right personality and how to engage their supportive spirit.

MY RATING:4STARS

JJ's Journey: The Unbelievable Life of JJ, The Therapy Dog is a must-read for dog-lovers like me. Undeniably, the canine's compassionate personality and truly being the man's best-friend is shown here through JJ's story. JJ has also retired from being a therapy dog and she was undergoing chemotherapy. It is really heartbreaking whenever our canine pals/family are sick and we always try to ease their pain by giving back the comfort they've given us.

The lives of dogs usually span from 10-15 years and even though their life expectancy is short, they devote their whole life spreading love and empathy; and that's what we should learn from them. It's not how long we live, but on how we spend/use it to help others.

MY RATING:3STARS
I've got to enjoy only 6 out of the 35 new poems/prose in this 3rd book of Lang Leav. I was anticipating that this could be better than her 2nd book, Lullabies. But I was quite disappointed that it didn't meet my expectations.

These are the 6 poems/prose that I like in this book:

Virtual Love

A Writer's Plea

Take me someplace where I can feel something—I want to give away my heart. Tell me his name so I can know love when it speaks to me. Give me someone I can write about.

Dear Love

In Love

You’ve not yet had your heart in halves,
so little do you know of love—
to tell me I will soon forget,
there will be others to regret.
Now all the years have proved you wrong,
my love for him burns bright and strong;
you can’t divide the stars from night—
from love there can be no respite.

AUTHOR: Lang Leav

PUBLISHER: Andrews McMeel Publishing
PUBLICATION DATE: October 4, 2016
PAGES: 240
SYNOPSIS FROM GOODREADS:

Lang Leav presents a completely new collection of poetry with a celestial theme in The Universe of Us.

Planets, stars, and constellations feature prominently in this beautiful, original poetry collection from Lang Leav. Inspired by the wonders of the universe, the best-selling poetess writes about love and loss, hope and hurt, being lost and found. Lang's poetry encompasses the breadth of emotions we all experience and evokes universal feelings with her skillfully crafted words.

MY RATING:3STARS
I tried to like the poems in this book by Lang Leav. But it seems that no matter how much I try, I can't seem to connect to almost 90% of the content of this collection. I just found some poems too pretentious while some are bland and vague.

Lang Leav is a poet and internationally exhibiting artist.

MY RATING:3STARS
I had high hopes for these poetry books of this author because they are always on the bestseller list in our local bookstores here. So I was really curious about what's the hype and give some time to read them. Just like my review of her book Love & Misadventure, I was thinking that maybe I was neither in love or heartbroken that's why I cannot fully grasp those poems. But I guess it's not me because there are other not-so-good reviews about this.

Still, regardless of the low rating I gave and the bad review, I found some good poems in this book such as When, An Artist in Love, Forewarned, The Dream, The Poet, Perfect, Ode to Sorrow, and Almost.

While the short stories I enjoyed are Patience

Dyslexia, Dead Poets, Despondency, and Nostalgia for Today.

MY RATING:4STARS
These are the poems that I like in this book: Just Friends, Afraid to Love, A Way Out, The Keeper, and Jealousy. Is it me or it is just that some of the poems included here are either lack of depth or feelings?

But despite that, I really like Lost Things

and Dead Butterflies;

especially the latter. I might have enjoyed these books of Lang Leav if I am either in love or heartbroken at the moment.

PUBLICATION DATE: November 14, 2017

PAGES: 240
SYNOPSIS FROM GOODREADS:

Smoke & Mirrors is the third book from internationally bestselling poet Michael Faudet, author of Bitter Sweet Love and Dirty Pretty Things—both finalists in the 2016 and 2015 Goodreads Readers Choice Awards.

Beautifully captured in poetry, prose, and short stories, Faudet's whimsical and sometimes erotic writing has captured the hearts and minds of thousands of readers from around the world.

MY RATING: ★★★★★
Just within this year, I was able to read the first two poetry books of Michael Faudet and I was quite disappointed, thus I have to rate them low. But this latest and soon-to-be-published poetry book of Faudet is very impressive! I can count a lot of poems that are remarkably well-written most notably Destined To Be Yours, Love, and A Beautiful Deception. Once released, I would definitely obtain a copy because this is for keeps.

SYNOPSIS FROM GOODREADS:

MY RATING:1STAR
Similar to Faudet's first published of a compilation of poems, this 2nd book of the author didn't please me. There are few prose and poems that are a bit okay yet still far to be considered remarkable or exceptional.
