I Wrote This for You and Only You by Iain S. Thomas
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
I enjoyed Iain S. Thomas' I Wrote This For You book and I was eager to check this out and see if it could be better. There are several good prose and poems in this collection, however, I think that the majority of the content is just repetitious. I know that this is a continuation of Thomas' bestseller book, but it didn't stand out from its predecessor; it's nothing but just a mere sequel. In spite of that, I still like it and might recommend this to others who are also into poetry.
Lady Mechanika, Vol. 4: Clockwork Assassin by Joe Benítez
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I was able to read a free copy of the first installment of the Lady Mechanika: La Dama de la Muerte before. I was really amazed by how great that issue is and I promised that someday I would try to check the other stories in the Lady Mechanika series.
And now, I saw that there's another free reading copy of the incredible this comic book. I was ecstatic to get my hands on this digital copy, and I'm really happy and amazed at how great the tandem of Benitez and Chen in coming up with this another awesome story.
I'm looking forward to reading the other upcoming adventures of Lady Mechanika. This, in particular, is a worthy-read and really recommendable.
Perfect World, Vol. 1 by Rie Aruga
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
The hardships of being handicapped were also noted in this manga and I like how the love story between Tsugumi and Itsuki was not rush, which might start in the second volume. The story recounts how the main characters were met during their high school years and on how fate pulled them to meet again after several years. If you are just like me who enjoyed and is a fan of Jojo Moyes' best-selling novel, Me Before You, I highly recommend that you should check out this spectacular graphic novel of Rie Aruga.
In Search of Peter Pan by Cosey
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
I love how this graphic novel was brilliantly illustrated and that the story is worth reading. However, I don't know if it's just me but I didn't understand how the title could mirror the storyline, or on how it was related to it. Perhaps, I missed an important detail while reading this, but I reckon that there is a much-suitable title that could reflect or summarize the story.
Kinski by Gabriel Hardman
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
A traveling salesman Joe found a puppy and he thought it was for him to save the black labrador from its owner(s). I think that the dog is not neglected at all because looks like it is being taken care of Holly and her son. Joe thought that the dog was being disregarded just because it got lost.
Although I deeply disapprove the tying of any dog outside or in the yard, Joe could have talked with the dog's owners on how to properly take care of the hound. But I guess Joe's intense affection to Kinski has led him to get him out from an animal shelter in Mexico. Holly's boyfriend intentionally left the dog in the road, therefore, Kinski might have crossed the border and end up in Mexico.
I appreciated the story of being compassionate and rescuing animals, however, Joe's personality seems quite odd here because of his obsession with getting the dog out of town, when in fact, Kinski was loved by Holly and her son. The illustration is great and even though it is only in black and white, I still appreciated how good it was drawn.
The Retreat by Mark Edwards
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
First time to read a novel written by Mark Edwards and I was absolutely amazed by all those plot twists in the narrative. While reading this psychological thriller and mystery book, I have three characters that I suspect who might be the culprit in the sudden disappearances of two kids from 1980 and after 35 years. One of my guesses was correct, but what I didn't expect is that there are a lot more astonishing revelations.
I was really fascinated by how intriguing and mind-boggling the story of Lucas Radcliffe and his experience in the retreat house named Nyth Bran, which is located in the village of Beddmawr. The setting is very ideal to the plot of the story and anyone can visualize it easily because of how the author perfectly describes it. Moreover, I was taken by surprise by the ending and I surmise that readers will also have the same reaction once they read it. I highly recommend it to anyone because you will be bewitched immediately, even if you are not into this kind of genre.
Mae Vol. 1 by Gene Ha
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
The first volume of the graphic novel, Mae , started really good. However, I find that I slowly lost interest in the latter part of the story. Nevertheless, I still appreciate the illustrations, and that I like how the story and relationship of Mae and Abbie as sisters was strongly emphasized. This graphic novel is good but not considerable to recommend to my fellow comic book enthusiast.
After Anna by Lisa Scottoline
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
After Anna is another great mystery/thriller novel that I've read this year. I was not exactly a fan of this genre but when I have read this book, it is one of the reasons why I included mystery and thriller to my list. What I like about it is that it will make readers make wild guesses about what's really happening. From beginning till the end, readers will never be disappointed because of a lot of unexpected twists were put in the story, especially in the ending. Thanks to the publisher because I was given the chance to read this amazing book by Lisa Scottoline.
Southbound! by Zidrou
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Glorious Summers: 1 Southbound is a graphic novel that narrates the supposedly final summer vacation of the Belgian family, Faldérault, before the parents' plan of divorce. Their adventure going south to France gave some time for the parents, Pierre and Maddie, to reflect on their life together and how much they really love their family. A great short-read that will also make you want to join them because of how fun they were having on their journey.
Moteki, 1: Love Strikes! by Mitsurou Kubo
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Moteki is a decade old manga series written by Mitsurou Kubo. It tells the story of Yukiyo Fujimoto who is no-girlfriend since birth and is in his late 20's already. Readers could see how frustrated Yukiyo is about his zero love life and how his life started to transform one day that got him entangled to several ladies.
The first volume is 438-pages but reading this will not bore readers because of how funny and how fast the story progress. If I have the chance to watch either the film adaptation or the TV series of this manga, I will try to check them out and see if they are as good as the manga version. I can't wait for the second volume of this amusing manga and hope that there will be ARC also available.
Spectacle Vol. 1 by Megan Rose Gedris
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
A mystery and thriller with a pinch of humor and magic in a graphic novel, that's what readers would find in this amazing first installment of the Spectacle comic series. I didn't expect much when I've checked the synopsis, but I was really amazed at how great the story was written. It is not perfect but reading this reminds us of several things, such as loving our siblings and respect.
